Hal Deily has been riding motorbikes almost his entire life.

He clung to his father during motorcycle rides as a boy, took out plenty of dirt bikes and cruised on a speedy Honda in his late teens.

Then he bought a Harley-Davidson, and for all the rides he has taken since, Deily says his maxim is to tell boring stories.

“We want to talk about the places where we ate, the places where we stayed, and the sights that we saw,” Deily said. “We don’t want to talk about the guy that pulled out and we had to do all these crazy maneuvers to miss them.”

From 2010-14, August has produced the highest number of motorcycle crashes in Western Pennsylvania, PennDOT data show. A total of 290 crashes occurred in Allegheny, Lawrence and Beaver counties — the most of any month in the April-to-October riding season.

PennDOT on Thursday plugged its Pennsylvania Motorcycle Safety Program at equipment and accessories store Cycle Gear in Allison Park.

Deily, president of the Greater Pittsburgh Motorcycle Council and an 18-year driving instructor, said the program offers courses for beginners and experienced riders, who can get an insurance break with safety training.
